It was a full house at 7:00 a.m. in the President’s Dining Room as nearly 40 of the Dental School’s students, faculty, and donors got an earlier than usual start on a recent Friday morning. In order to honor both the students who receive scholarships and the donors who generously contribute funds, Dean Kenneth Kalkwarf, DDS, MS, hosted a breakfast as a means of giving students and donors an opportunity to meet face to face.

The students who attended represented each of the four years, the majority being first year students. Our donors were also a varied group. Dr. Ray Scott (DDS ’83) came down from Austin to represent Longhorn Dental, a group practice based in the Austin area, which has contributed $30,000 in scholarship funds over the last 5 years. Melissa Nix, 4th year class president, was on hand to talk with Dr. Scott about how the Longhorn Dental Scholarship has helped her this year. Other attendees from Austin included representatives of the TDA Smiles Foundation, Christine Kutnick, Foundation Director, and Alan B. Moore, DDS, member of the foundation’s Board of Trustees. This academic year, the TDA Smiles Foundation will award scholarships to two students. Jeff Shao, a first year student, was able to attend and visit with Ms. Kutnick and Dr. Moore and express his gratitude for the foundation’s scholarship support.

Locally, Dr. Michael Boland (DDS ’74) attended as a representative of the Dental School Alumni Association Scholarships. The Alumni Association has given over $170,000 to establish various scholarships in the School. In addition, representatives of the local OKU Chapter were on hand to meet their student recipients as were Brett Mueller, DDS and Cynthia Banker Mueller (DDS ’75) who have established two endowments in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry.

Many students who attended were not able to meet their donors but they all had a chance to express their appreciation for the scholarships they have received. Each student got a chance to introduce him or herself, which gave our guests the opportunity to see first hand what a wide variety of students we have and that every dollar given to support scholarships has a great personal impact on someone’s life.
