For a fourth year, UT Health San Antonio resident wins the Byrd/Tilson/Walker Outstanding Resident Presentation Award

Contributor

June 19, 2023

The Southwest Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons is one of six regional oral and maxillofacial (OMS) societies in the United States. During the first day of their annual society meeting, which was held in The Woodlands, Texas this year, residents from the Southwest region’s OMS training programs present scientific and clinical research initiatives ongoing at their respective institutions of study. The objectives of the presentations are for residents to be able to discuss a broad overview of the extensive clinical scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery residency training programs; to inform oral and maxillofacial surgeons in private practice about current advances in treatment modalities and innovative technological applications that improve patient outcomes; to encourage future oral and maxillofacial surgeons to remain involved in clinical research throughout their careers and to support the evolution of the specialty.

The Byrd/Walker/Tilson resident award started eleven years ago, honors the resident giving the best presentation at the meeting.

This year’s award went to Isaac Morton, DMD, MD, a fifth-year resident in the School of Dentistry Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program. Dr. Morton completed a two-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry Certificate at UT Health San Antonio where he developed a strong interest in facial esthetics, implants and bone and soft tissue augmentation. He received his doctor of medicine in 2021 and will complete his OMS residency in 2024. He enjoys the broad scope that oral and maxillofacial surgery provides and has a special interest in orthognathic surgery, maxillofacial trauma and reconstructive procedures.

Edward Ellis, DDS, MS, professor and chair, Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, noted that the OMS department has now won four Byrd/Tilson/Walker awards in a row, and six of the 11 given since its inception.

“I am very proud of Dr. Isaac Morton and his faculty advisor Dr. Daniel Perez,” Ellis commented. “They continue to wave the UT Health San Antonio flag!”
