SERVICES PROVIDED
The Dental School at the UTHSCSA offers an extensive range of dental
treatments and oral healthcare services for adults and children.
Because UTHSCSA is principally an educational facility, prospective
patients interested in receiving dental care are primarily selected
on the basis nature of their problems and of their teaching potential.
Patients who are accepted for care are treated by dental students
under the supervision of faculty dentists. Treatment may include
periodontal therapy, restorations, bridges, endodontics, partials
or dentures. The UTHSCSA appreciates the contribution patients make
to the students' education and supports the nondiscriminatory selection
of patients.
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN APPLYING TO BECOME A PATIENT
After calling the Dental School with interest of becoming a patient,
you will be given an appointment for a “Screening Appointment”,
which is a preliminary exam to identify the types oral health problems
you have. For many patients, preliminary diagnostic radiographs and
intraoral photographs will be taken. This information will be entered
into a computer database that serves as a patient pool for the educational
programs. Students, through groups they are assigned to, select patients
by viewing the patients' dental needs as determined by the screening
examinations and by evaluating how they meet his/her own need for
clinical experiences. This selection process takes into account how
your oral and systemic health problems match a group of patients
that individual students are treating. Some potential patients oral
problems may be to complex for students to manage and may be referred
to graduate or specialty clinics for screening and or treatment.
WHEN YOU HAVE BEEN ASSIGNED TO A STUDENT
He/She will call you to confirm your desire for treatment, availability
and ability to comply with the responsibilities of being a patient
in the Dental School. An appointment for individual students and
their supervising faculty will be made to review the information
recorded at the screening appointment before treatment begins and
confirm your appropriateness for assignment.
