September 21, 2020
Sonam Khurana, BDS, MDS, third-year resident in the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology program, was honored with the 2020 Maria Yeung Postdoctoral Research Award this summer.
This award recognizes an outstanding postdoctoral dental researcher and is based on a candidate’s consistent and active research record.
Dr. Khurana, whose research has focused on various aspects of oral and maxillofacial radiology, is extremely grateful to have her work recognized in this way.
“I want to thank my mentor, Dr. Taraneh Maghsoodi, who nominated me and the award committee members who selected me,” she says. “I also want to extend my gratitude to the award donor. I genuinely hope to someday be as generous to others as they have been towards me.”
As part of her award, Dr. Khurana has received an engraved glass trophy and a $3,500 cash award. She plans to use her award funding to promote studies towards artificial intelligence in oral and maxillofacial radiology techniques.
This award is named in memory of Maria E. Yeung, PhD, a faculty member in the former department of pediatric dentistry from 1987-1999. Dr. Yeung, a native of China, was a graduate of UT Health San Antonio earning her Ph.D. in microbiology. She was a competitive long-distance runner and participated in events around the country, including the Boston Marathon. Dr. Yeung’s research at the institution was on the development of a genetic system for Actinomyces.
In August of 1999, Dr. Yeung was fatally struck by a vehicle while jogging on the access road of Loop 1604. Her brother, Woon-Shing Yeung, established an endowment in her memory with the hope of encouraging and rewarding the future generation of scientists.
Congratulations to Dr. Khurana and the oral maxillofacial radiology program for their continued excellence and for honoring the memory of Dr. Yeung.
