In February, during the UT Health San Antonio Center of Medical Humanities and Ethics’ 15th Annual Community Service Learning (CSL) Conference, senior dental student Jacqueline Sanders and her team were awarded the Interprofessional Education (IPE) Award for their poster titled “San Antonio Refugees: Their Determinants of Oral Health, Status, and Barriers”.

Led by Jacqueline, the team presenting the winning poster included dental, nursing and medical students. Student team members were Jacqueline Sanders, Jonathan Lefkowitz, Azadeh Abdollahi, Chintal Patel, Gabreiela Paz, Alireza Mehmandoost, Cristopher Paico, Romali Kamat, Alaa Diab, Yunsha Ehtesham and Abakar Baraka. The team’s faculty mentors were Moshtagh Farokhi, DDS, MPH, Branden Skarpiak, MD, Heidi Worabo, DNP with St. Francis Episcopal Church as their community partner.

The Annual CSL Conference at UT Health San Antonio originated in 2008 as an opportunity to learn from the CSL experiences of students, faculty, staff, and community partners in San Antonio and across Texas. Each year, the conference focuses on a theme relevant to service-learning and hosts experts and guest lecturers, provides skill-building sessions, and showcases CSL projects through students’ poster presentations. This year’s conference theme was “Unseen and Unheard: Meeting the Needs of Displaced Youth.”

The conference’s program provides more information about this year’s event. A list of all submitted student poster abstracts including the linked poster files is also available.
