Early this month, the American Academy of Periodontology announced that their membership has elected Angela Palaiologou-Gallis, D.D.S., M.S. to serve as Director of the American Board of Periodontology.
Dr. Palaiologou-Gallis is a Professor and Assistant Program Director in the Department of Periodontics; the department’s newest addition, appointed in November 2018. She also is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology due to her significant achievements beyond the mandatory educational requirements of her specialty.
Dr. Palaiologou-Gallis has been serving as an examiner for the American Board of Periodontology (ABP) since 2014. In a comment about this announcement, Dr. Brian Mealey, Professor in the Department of Periodontics, mentioned that “This is a big deal. Being the Director of the ABP carries the responsibility for ensuring the integrity of the specialty.”
Dr. Palaiologou-Gallis received her D.D.S. from the National University of Athens, Greece. After practicing privately for a couple of years, she received a full scholarship from the National Scholarship Foundation of Greece to specialize in Periodontics. Attending Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, Dr. Palaiologou-Gallis received her certificate in Periodontics and a Master of Science in Pharmacology. Following another 7 years in private practice, she returned to LSUHSC and began her academic career involving herself in didactic and clinical teaching of dental students and postgraduate residents. In 2009 she was appointed as Postgraduate Program Director in LSUHSC’s Periodontics department and served in that position until her appointment with UTHSA.
Dr. Palaiologou-Gallis is also very active in research. She is currently Principle Investigator for a randomized controlled clinical trial entitled, “Regenerative Potential of Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) and Platelet Rich in Growth Factors (PRGF) in Maxillary Sinus Augmentation”. She is also Co-Investigator for research projects funded by the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and Zimmer Dental.
The Department of Periodontics has a stellar track record in regard to faculty serving in national board leadership roles. Directors of the American Board of Periodontology have included Drs. Roland “Rollie” Meffert, James “Jim” Mellonig, Michael “Mike” Mills, and Brian Mealey. Currently, Drs. David Deas and Angela Palaiologou-Gallis are Directors, while Drs. Mealey, Mills and David Lasho currently serve as Examiners for the Board.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Palaiologou-Gallis on her appointment. Dr. Peter Loomer, Professor and Dean, remarks "This is a great achievement, as has been the contributions of our faculty to the ABP."
